Bottom Fishing For High Dividend Stocks – Part 1

Bottom Fishing For High Dividend Stocks – Part 1

Given the 30%-plus rise in the S&P 500 since March 9th, 2009, income investors are increasingly challenged to find high dividend stocks whose prices haven’t gotten ahead of themselves.

On a recent bottom fishing expedition, I screened for 3 preliminary parameters:

1. High Dividend Yield – Above 5 % (The S&P 500 average dividend yield is approximately 3.42%).

2. Moderate Dividend Payout Ratio – Below 50 % (The S&P’s current payout ratio is approximately 59 %).

3. Less Than 40 % Above 52-Week Low

4. Options Available

This preliminary screen yielded several companies, from 4 different sectors: Consumer Goods, Industrials, Basic Materials, and Financials.

I then added the following 2 balance sheet screening ratios, in order to find the most well-funded companies:

1. Current Ratio: Over 1.5

2. Long Term Debt to Equity: Under .5

These additional screens yielded just 5 companies, one of whom I’ve been following for awhile – Cal-Maine Foods, (CALM).

You may have often heard the advice, “Only invest in what you understand”. Cal-Maine Foods just happens to be one of those easy-to-understand companies – they’re the biggest distributor of eggs in the US.

Eggs are a basic food staple, something that consumers aren’t going to do without, even in a recession. In fact, during a recession, consumers tend to eat at home more often, which plays to Cal-Maine’s strength as a major distributor to supermarket chains.

CALM compares favorably within its peer group, Packaged Foods: Poultry & Meats, sporting the 2nd highest dividend yield, (7.5%), and the 2nd lowest beta, (.40).

Right in line with the S&P 500’s rally gain, CALM is currently 34% above its 52-week low of .01, and approximately 53% off its high of .80.

What’s the best way to invest in CALM? That depends upon your risk profile, and your assessment of the market. If you’re an income investor, looking to maximize your yields, there are 2 different approaches that may suit your needs, each based on different outlooks:

(For simplicity’s sake, we’ll illustrate this trade example by buying 100 shares, since 1 option contract controls 100 shares of the underlying stock.)

Scenario A (BULLISH): Covered Call/Buy-Write approach:

1. Buy 100 shares of CALM at .58, (its 5/28/09 opening price).

2. Sell 1 November call contract for .75/share. (A 7.75% yield)

3. Collect $.86/share in dividends before expiration. (A 3.81% yield)

When the November 21, 2009 expiration date comes, you’ll either:

1. Collect an additional .42/share in capital gains, due to the stock rising to or above .75, (the strike price plus the .75 call money).

OR

2. You’ll get to keep your shares, if the stock doesn’t rise to the resale trigger price of .75. Your new basis would be .97, (your original cost of .58 less the dividend and call income you received).

At this point, you could repeat this strategy, if you wanted to hold CALM for an additional period. SInce your cost basis would now be .97, you could research selling new calls at .50, or even at .00, if you weren’t feeling as bullish in November.

The annualized yields on this 6-month trade, (.58 cost basis), are as follows:

1. Call Yield: .75/share = 15.98%

2. Dividend Yield: $.86/share = 7.85%

This .61/share in income equals a 23.83% annualized static yield.

Notice how the call yield is over twice the dividend yield? This gives you added protection, in the event of an unforeseen dividend cut or other negative event.

3. Assigned Yield: .42/share = 22.1% (As noted above, if CALM rises to or above .75, your shares will be sold at the strike price)

Your breakeven in this trade in .97/share, or 11.56% for 6 months.

Your maximum profit is .03/share, or 22.28% for 6 months, which equals an annualized yield of 45.9%.

That’s a pretty good day’s fishing.

In Part 2 of this series, I’ll detail a less bullish, more defensive strategy with this stock, which gives an investor an equally impressive yield.

Disclosure: Author is long on CALM.

Kria Resources’ Metallurgical Test Results Indicate Halfmile Lake Project Ore Is Compatible With Xstrata Zinc’s Brunswick 12 Milling Facility

Sep 3rd

Posted by in shareholder disputes

TORONTO, ONTARIO–(Marketwire – Sept. 1, 2010) – Kria Resources (TSX VENTURE:KIA) (“Kria” or the “Company”) today announced results from metallurgical bench test work for its Halfmile Lake project located near Bathurst, New Brunswick. overall, the results indicate the Halfmile Lake ore is similar to the ore at Xstrata’s Brunswick 12 mill and it is compatible with the Brunswick 12 milling facility process.

As previously announced, Kria completed a drill program at the Halfmile Lake project (see Press Release dated May 26, 2010) in part to obtain fresh core samples for the purpose of conducting metallurgical bench test work to simulate Xstrata’s Brunswick 12 milling facility. These bench tests were used to determine recoveries and concentrate grades and to confirm amenability to the Brunswick 12 processing facility owned by Xstrata Zinc when the ore from Halfmile Lake is toll processed from the Halfmile Lake property.

Composites from Halfmile Lake and Brunswick ores were tested separately following the process flow sheet and reagent dosages and consumption supplied by Xstrata Zinc and used at Brunswick 12. The test results show that copper flotation kinetics is the same for the two composites from Halfmile Lake and Brunswick 12, while Halfmile composite lead and zinc flotation kinetics is generally faster compared to the Brunswick composite. In addition, two blended tests of Brunswick and Halfmile composites in the following manner 80:20, and 90:10 have been completed, which indicate that Halfmile Lake ore is amenable to the Brunswick 12 process. A further two blend tests, representing current Brunswick 12 reagent consumptions, will be conducted. These additional blended composite tests will be complete in early September, 2010, which should confirm that the blends in the above ratios are compatible with the Brunswick 12 milling facility process and further validate that Halfmile Lake ore is amenable to Xstrata’s Brunswick 12 process.

Kria announced in November 2009 that it was in discussions with Xstrata Zinc to potentially utilize Xstrata’s Brunswick 12 mill to toll process ore from Kria’s Halfmile Lake property once it is advanced to production. Kria intends, upon receipt of governmental permits, to begin development activities at the Halfmile Lake site in order to begin supplying ore to Xstrata’s Brunswick 12 processing facility by early 2011, assuming an agreement with Xstrata is successfully negotiated.

Discussions with Xstrata with regards to the terms of toll processing ore at the Brunswick 12 mill have progressed and Kria expects to finalize an agreement in the next month.

The metallurgical bench testing was conducted at SGS Lakefield laboratories and was lead by Wardrop, a Tetra Tech Company (“Wardrop”), under the supervision of Georgi Doundarov, P. Eng., PMP, CCE, who is an independent “Qualified Person” and employee of Wardrop.

The scientific and technical contents of this press release have been supervised, reviewed and approved by Steve Davies, P. Eng., Vice President Operations of Kria and Dayle Rusk, P. Geo., Vice President Exploration of Kria, both of whom are Qualified Persons as defined under NI 43-101 guidelines.

About Kria Resources

Kria Resources is a base metal exploration and development company focused on high-quality, advanced-stage base metal assets. Kria’s primary asset is the Halfmile Lake and Stratmat properties near Bathurst, New Brunswick. The Halfmile Lake and Stratmat projects are optioned by Kria from Xstrata, which is currently the largest shareholder of Kria.

Kria completed a preliminary economic assessment (“PEA”) on its Halfmile Lake project in July 2009 that estimated a pre-tax NPV of C$587 million (0% discount) and IRR of over 16% based on metal prices of US$0.80/lb Zn, US$1.91/lb Cu, US$0.56/lb Pb and US$10.59/oz Ag. The PEA indicated there is potential to create a combined Halfmile Lake/Stratmat project that would improve the project’s economics if the mineral resource from Kria’s nearby Stratmat property is combined with the mineral resource from Halfmile Lake.

Please refer to the Company’s technical reports filed on SEDAR for details regarding the NI 43-101 compliant resource estimates on Halfmile, Stratmat and Ruttan. Prices and other assumptions mentioned in this press release are Kria’s internal assumptions and estimates. Additional information is available at www.kriaresources.com.

– Refining your Game With a Golf Net

A great way to improve your golf game is to buy a golf net. Golfers invest in golf nets for a variety of reasons depending on their skill level, their ability to practice, and their own goals for their golf game. A golf practice net is a great way to improve your accuracy, your swing, and even your stance. A golf net will allow you to practice all of the elements crucial to your golf game in just about any space, big or small. A golf cage net will also allow avid golfers to have a place to practice their swing even when they can’t get to the course or the driving range.

Because golfers will use their golf nets in a variety of areas, one can find a variety of golf ball net solutions. When you go to any golf shop or even shop online you’ll find that there is a golf hitting net in just about every price range, which is good news because you’ll typically be able to find a quality product that will help you achieve the desired results and changes to your golf game. If you aren’t necessarily shopping for a golf net to improve your game but just to have the ability to practice anywhere at anytime, you’ll also find that there is golf practice net that will fit your needs as well as your budget.

If you are shopping for a simple golf training net you’ll likely find something like the Chip Shot Pop UP Chipping Net. This is a very simple net that will simply act as a stopper for all of your golf balls. While this product does not have a target in the rear of it, it does offer one the ability to see where their ball will land after each and every swing so you can still practice your swing, your stance, as well as your accuracy. This type of net will usually cost about .00 and can be used as an indoor golf net as well as an outdoor net.

If you want something a bit more upscale you can always go for the P-Net Golf Practice Net. This golf net offers a target as well as small sides to help keep the balls in the net even if they go off to the sides a bit. The target at the back of this golf net will help improve accuracy and build confidence with a new stance, a new swing, or the beginner that just wants to get a grasp of all of the fundamentals of golf. This type of golf practice net will run a bit more, costing about 0.00 but is well worth it for those that want a professional quality golf net at their disposal.

A wrap around golf net is a great idea. This type of golf net almost looks like a little dome. This half dome like construction helps to catch miss-hits for the golfer so that chasing down balls does not take up all of ones practice time. The wrap around golf net is actually a three sided net or tent like structure and is one of the most useful golf nets that you can buy. Many of these products simply pop right up and golf down quickly so that it can be taken anywhere at a moments notice.

A golf net really is a great tool for any golfer and you’ll find that most experts have their very own golf net to further their skills. A great golfer is one that realizes he or she must always improve their game to stand out, and a golf net is a great way to practice your golf game in the comfort of your own home or backyard. When you consider how much a net can help you improve or gain confidence in your golfing abilities you’ll find that it is a necessary investment for any golfer.

Engineering Consultancy Firms – Industry Leaders Realising Your Visions

From the ancient Chinese temples and Egyptian pyramids to the latest skyscrapers spread across the Dubai skyline, engineering consultancy firms have played a pivotal role in the delivery of vision into reality. The evolution of built structures throughout the history of mankind has been the direct result of innovative civil engineers – and this evolution shows no signs of slowing. Leading engineering consultancy firms are continually pushing the envelope of design capabilities to engage with the challenges of the future. Fuelling the need for pioneering civil engineering companies are the demographic trends of increasing population numbers, and the concentration of that population in urban centres, as well as environmental concerns.

The next few decades will be some of the most challenging and demanding for those charged with the responsibility of developing and implementing urban, residential and enterprise construction in the face of increasingly sophisticated design plans and equipment, as well as meeting the strict guidelines for sustainability, energy efficiency and longevity.

Advancing technology being implemented by leading engineering consultancy firms allows the continual development of better and more cost effective designs and construction methods. A key focus of nearly all national, regional and local governmental and council authorities is the planning, design, construction and operation of a range of facilities that accommodate the population it serves. This encourages civic and community engagement, and facilitating the activities of modern life. Engineering consultancy firms are the problem solvers, balancing the needs of infrastructure with the managerial necessities of large population bases, including pollution, congestion, safety, water requirements, urban redevelopment and city beautification.

As the technological revolution expands, as the world’s population increases, and as environmental concerns mount, the skills and experience only available through industry leading and innovative engineering consultants, with a proven track history of delivering exceptional results will be in ever increasing demand. Those organisations that encourage corporate values and principles that create a spirit of trust and co-operation with their clients ensure the delivery of quality outcomes that will stand the test of time.

There are various divisions and specialities within the civil engineering profession, including structural, environmental, geotechnical, water resources, transportation, construction and urban planning. It is rare to find a civil engineering company that can fulfil the wide array of responsibilities requiring specialised knowledge. Those that do can streamline the design, application approval and construction processes through the expertise their organisation holds and the large planning team available for achieving practical solutions.

Alastair is the Managing Director of Harrison Grierson and is responsible for the operational performance of the New Zealand and Australian companies. He also prepares the Company’s strategic and business plans and coordinates the development of operational and CAPEX budgets for both companies. He has overseen the development of quality assurance programs to ensure service delivery to clients in accordance with contracted obligations and has introduced divisional performance accountabilities. Alastair has coordinated the preparation of personnel management processes for recruitment, professional development and retention of staff and has introduced a Company wide individual performance development programme. SouthernSun expands into real estate in merger with Mercury Investment

They help lead the same Sunday school class, the Sojourners, at second Presbyterian.

Their kids studied together at Presbyterian Day School and Memphis University School.

They go across the world on church mission trips together.

So suffice it to say that the fit felt comfortable when Earl Blankenship’s firm, Mercury Investment Management, merged recently into Michael Cook’s SouthernSun Asset Management.

SouthernSun, with 23 employees and $1.3 billion in assets, is a boutique investment firm that has focused on small-cap equities for public and private pension plans, corporations, foundations, endowments and “high net worth investors.”

With the merger, SouthernSun opens a commercial real estate strategy to take advantage of today’s discount prices and to offer U.S. investments and currency diversification to some wealthy Chinese, among others.

Blankenship and the former Mercury team of real estate analysts he brought with him, Jim Dorman, Stuart Harris and associate Garrott McClintock, will help diversify SouthernSun at a time when the stock market is, well, mercurial.

“I would never have gone out and just attempted to launch a private commercial real estate fund,” Cook, SouthernSun’s CEO, said Thursday, “building from the ground up like I have the public equities business.”

Blankenship and his team of real estate analysts are kindred spirits, sharing Cook’s values, vision, energy and passion, Cook said.

It was strikingly apparent Blankenship could leverage the “infrastructure” SouthernSun has built the past 22 years, such as back office support and compliance operations, Cook said.

Blankenship isn’t just looking to buy distressed apartments, office and retail space at 30 cents on the dollar, but to find assets where he has specific expertise and understanding, Cook said.

“That resonated,” Cook said. “It’s a lot like we look at businesses for our portfolios.”

Said Blankenship: “It’s why people give us money. It’s because they believe we have some expertise that will deliver value.”

He and his real estate team have built their expertise and network in the Southeast, from Miami to Washington to Texas, Blankenship said.

“It’s where I spent the last 30 years doing transactions. … That’s where the big job growth has been.”

Blankenship says he resists trying to time the real estate market and squeezing the last bit of value out of assets.

His approach is to buy a building that’s, say, half-occupied, build up the occupancy and the building’s value, but not wait until it’s 97 percent filled before selling.

“We try to get the money back to investors as soon as possible,” Blankenship said.

Initially, the strategy of SouthernSun’s real estate team will be offering investments only to non-U.S. investors, primarily the Chinese.

“You really have to look at where in the world do they have higher saving rates, do they have economies that didn’t fold under the banking crisis in 2008,” Cook said. The overseas investors want to diversify the currency of their investments, and take advantage of the discounts in U.S. market.

The real estate team is now working on a $100 million fund. It will invest directly into real estate assets in secondary U.S. markets that typically draw fewer institutional investors, Blankenship said.

Cook doesn’t assume success will come easily. “It’s not a slam-dunk by any stretch of the imagination,” he said. “It’s going to take a lot of hard work and a lot of energy. we see some really great days ahead for the firm.”

Stock Trading- 5 Kinds of Stocks You Must Understand

Stock Trading- 5 Kinds of Stocks You Must Understand

Basically there are two groups of stocks, preferred and common stocks. Preferred stocks are comparable to bonds because their returns are fixed. Preferred shareholders get first dibs on dividends in good times and in assets if peradventure the company goes under. In other words, the risk of a preferred shareholder is limited, they are mainly interested in dividends. Very few companies issue preferred stock.

When investors talk about investing in stocks, they are referring to common stocks. The vast majority of investors are found in this class, common stockholders take on a few dimension of risk compared to preferred shareholders though common share holders command more voting power at annual general meetings.

The five kinds of stock in discussion fall under common stocks. An understanding of these stocks will greatly enhance your stock trading prospect. I don’t know your goal  when it comes to investing, one thing I know however is that you will be able to find one among the five stocks that fits your goal and temperament.

GROWTH STOCKS: Are stocks with great potentials for growth, they grow faster than the economy and sometimes than the stock market itself more often than not. The risk level is minimal; investors are attracted to it because they have good earning growth over the long run. Investors in this stock know that over the long term their portfolio is secured.

INCOME STOCKS: Investors who buy into this kind of stocks do so because it doles out a large portion of its profits. Income stocks pay as much as 60% to 80% to investors as dividends compared to other stocks. Income stocks are almost immune to changes in the market because investors are confident that they will receive dividends.

BLUE CHIP STOCKS: Derives its name from the poker game, the blue chips usually have the highest value. They are sector or industry leaders. They are big companies that have been around for a long time, they have strong fundamentals. They pay steady dividends and most times bonus scrip. Though their prices don’t grow very much, they are good options for retirement portfolios; they are best suited for the long term.

VALUE STOCKS: Are under priced stocks that has great potential for growth; look at it this way, value stocks sell below their real value which make them very attractive. If you compare the low price of value stocks to its earnings, you will understand why stock traders are attracted to it. They are good options for investors interested in growing their portfolio.

RECURRING STOCKS: These are stocks whose performances are affected by the swings of the economy. When the economy goes up or down a recurring stock responds likewise.
